EDUCATIONAL SEMINAR AT THE LEGENDS OF RANCHING PERFORMANCE HORSE SALE
Colorado State University Equine Sciences will be hosting an educational seminar on “How to Achieve Success in the Equine Industry” on Friday April 25th at the B.W. Pickett Equine Center. The event will run from 9am to 3pm and is free and open to the public.
The panel of speakers will include Dr. Jerry Black (Veterinarian/Breeder), Patti Carter (AQHA Professional Horsewoman), Jim Jennings (AQHA Executive Director of Publications), Thomas Saunders (Ranch and Event Manager), Gary Carpenter (AQHA Foundation), and Bill Smith (Horse Sale Manager & Three-time PRCA World Champion). Each of the invited speakers has been asked to discuss their respective backgrounds and what has allowed them to achieve success in the horse industry. Students and guests will also have several opportunities to ask questions, gather information and visit with our successful speakers. This is a great opportunity to learn exactly what it takes to become successful in the competitive and vast horse industry.
This seminar will be held in conjunction with the 3rd Annual Legends of Ranching Performance Horse Sale. CSU students enrolled in sales management and preparation, horse training, and event management classes have experienced a busy two semesters, culminating in the sale on April 26, 2008. Students will be able to utilize their classroom knowledge in a hands-on setting. Working alongside equine professionals, they have planned and advertised the sale. Students have trained and fitted two and three-year old fillies and geldings from some of the nation’s top ranches. Ultimately, the Legends sale is about the students and giving them a unique hands-on learning experience while also exposing them to the ins and outs of the equine sales industry. With the help of industry professionals like Jim Ware (Western Bloodstock), Bill and Carole Smith (Wyo Quarter Horse Ranch Sale), Robin Glenn (Robin Glenn Pedigrees) and Alex Maddox (adsfactory.com), students will learn what it takes to make a sale successful.
At the 2007 Legends of Ranching Performance Horse Sale, forty-four ranch-bred horses were sold with an average price of $5401.00. The highlight of the sale was Jacks Strait Shot, a six year-old grey gelding sired by Jack Nasty out of Ms Silver Commander, consigned by the Pitchfork Land & Cattle Co. The gelding was sold by auctioneer Don Green for $23,500.00. The Pitchfork Land & Cattle Co. is a 175,000 acre ranch in Dickens, TX.

Students Shine in Wagonhound Land & Livestock Co. Competition |
|
|
|
On Saturday, March 3rd, 2007 Colorado State University Equine Sciences and the Equine Event Management class hosted a competition for students of the Horse Training Laboratory. The competition was sponsored by Wagonhound Land & Livestock Co. Students competed for the coveted prize of a custom, hand-made saddle, donated and crafted by their fellow Equine Science student, Zach Iddings and $5000.00 worth of scholarship money donated by Wagonhound Land and Livestock Co. Each student that competed worked with their horse all fall and spring to reach this competition. Event management students took care of the details for the day and had the show running smoothly and on-time. It was a day for students to show off their horses and skills to faculty, consignors, family and friends.
Will French, from Fort Collins, CO, took first in the salesmanship portion. His grey filly, Miss A Rap, is consigned by the Bartlett Ranch. He also placed in the top-five of the riding portion with Pretty Good Pick, a sorrel mare from the Four Sixes Ranch. Emily Rapp, from Durango, CO took first in the riding portion aboard Taris Punkin Bar, a sorrel gelding consigned by the T-Cross Ranch. Emily was second in the salesmanship portion with Navajo Stik, a brown gelding consigned by Major Cattle Co. Students placing in the top-five were rewarded with scholarships, ribbons and other prizes.
Many of the horses participating in the student competition will be sold in the Legends of Ranching Performance Horse Sale, March 10, 2007 and others will return to their respective ranches. “This competition allowed our students to really show-off what they have been working so hard on up to this point.” said Bobbie Skelton, instructor for the training class. “They deserved a day to shine and I am very proud of the progress they have made with these young horses.”

Preparation for Equine Competition Class Competes in Scotland
On February 17, 2007 four students in the Preparation for Equine Competition class competed at the Royal (Dick) Veterinary College Horse Society Invitational Horse Show. The students representing CSU were Lindsay Collins, Paulina Liszka, Katie Mellon, and Lauren Farrington. The day started out with a dressage test. Each student competed on unknown horses and each horse was ridden by 4 different universities. The top scoring rider on each horse competed for a second time. Lauren Farrington from CSU moved on to the second round. At the conclusion of dressage, the students then competed over a jump course. The jump horses were different than the dressage horses and they were once again ridden by 4 different universities. The top scoring riders on each horse then moved on to a second jumping round. CSU students were 3rd overall in the dressage phase and 6th overall for the combined scores. Congratulations to the students who competed. |
