The camp is designed to be both an educational and fun experience for youths 10 to 15 years of age. Both English and Western disciplines are available during each camp session. Campers are under supervision by counselors and/or instructors during their stay at CSU. Housing and meals are provided in a university residence hall on the main campus. Transportation between main campus and the B.W. Pickett Equine Center is provided by counselors in University vans.

Colorado State University Equine Sciences is pleased to offer the following sessions of Summer Horsemanship Camp:

  • Camp Session 1: June 7-12, 2009
  • Camp Session 2: June 14-19, 2009

Camp begins on Sunday with registration at 2:00 pm for campers and horses. Campers will be transported to the dormitory at 4:00 pm by their parents or the counselors to get settled before attending dinner at 5:00 pm.  Each subsequent day combines riding lessons and lectures on topics suach as safety, grooming, nutrition and horse behavior.  Additional activities are designed to expose campers to other areas of the equine industry and help campers get to know one another.  Campers will have the opportunity to swim at the CSU Recreational Sports pool on the main campus at least once during the week.  On the last morning, campers will demonstrate their skills for their parents before leaving by 11:00 am to return home.


Requirements
Prior to participating in the Horsemanship Camps, all campers must meet the following requirements:

  • All campers must have previous riding experience and be able to demonstrate basic riding skills.
  • All campers and their parents are required to sign a Waiver of Liability, a Standards of Conduct and Lost Key Deposit agreement.
  • All campers are required to provide proof of medical insurance.
  • All campers must wear approved riding helmets and footwear.


Camp Cost
Cost for camp will be $700.00 per week in 2009. This includes tuition, housing, activities and all meals beginning with dinner on the first day and ending with breakfast on the last. Stalls are also included and come pre-bedded. However, if you are bringing your own horse you are responsible for bringing extra shavings, hay, grain, grooming supplies, saddle, bridle, pads and any other necessary supplies to care for your horse.

Horse Information
Participants are encouraged to bring their own horse for use during camp.  A very limited number of CSU-owned horses will be available for lease at a cost of $125.00 for the week. Campers who are bringing their own horses are required to provide the following prior to or at registration:

1. Health certificate (within 30 days)
2. Valid negative Coggins certificate (within 1 year)
3. Proof of 4-way/5-way vaccination* (3 weeks to 6 months)
4. Proof of West Nile vaccination (yearly)*

Registration 
Registration for the 2009 sessions will begin February 9, 2009. 
Please do not forward registrations prior to February 9th; those received prior to the registration date will be returned in order to ensure a fair registration process for all.

Registration is limited and will be accepted and confirmed on a first come, first serve basis. Registration cutoff for both sessions is May 1, or sooner if full. A waiting list will be established for registrations received after the camps are full. Confirmation of enrollment and additional information concerning the Summer Horsemanship Camp will be mailed after the registration deadline.

Cancellation Policy
All cancellations received three weeks prior to the start of each camp session will be refunded in full. Cancellations received after this date can only be refunded 75% until one day prior. Cancellations received one day prior or after camp has begun will not be refunded.  CSU reserves the right to combine or cancel camps for lack of enrollment. Any camp cancellation will be determined and announced directly after the registration deadline. In the event that camp is cancelled, a full refund of the registration fee will be issued.



Instructors
The primary riding instructors for camp will be University faculty supported by assistants and counselors who are experienced riding instructors. Lectures are provided by student counselors and the following Equine Sciences faculty:
