About The Team

Colorado State University's Horse Judging Team, in existence since 1978, is one of the country’s most successful horse judging programs. CSU's Horse Judging Team has won each of the major judging contests at least once, including the Morgan Nationals, Quarter Horse Congress, Arabian Nationals, Quarter Horse World Show, NRHA Futurity and the National Western Stock Show. Wins in the 2002 season include the American Quarter Horse Congress Judging Contest and reserve honors at the National Reining Horse Association Futurity Judging Contest.

How to Join
Selection for the competitive judging team begins in the spring with prospective team members taking the required prerequisite introductory course: AN 350 DV (Horse Judging). The introductory class meets during the spring semester on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00 to 5:00 in the Adams-Atkins Arena classroom. Students are encouraged to sign up for 2 credits of AN350 DV in the spring. Anyone can take this course. Students taking the introductory spring course are not required to judge on a competitive judging team. However, students interested in judging horses competitively for CSU, must first take the spring AN350 class.

Each spring there are approximately 55 students taking the introductory course. All students are polled throughout the semester to learn their individual interest in becoming a CSU Horse Judging Team member. Students interested in competing on the competitive judging team are grouped together and provided additional horse judging practices. Additionally, the team will attend 2 contests in the spring: The Rocky Mountain Horse Expo in Denver, CO and the APHA Spring Sweepstakes in Fort Worth, TX. Students who are taking the class for their own educational benefit and are not interested in competing nationally or traveling continue the semester at a moderate pace without additional practices to attend.
